A pasture-based raw milk dairy

A cow at Grassward Dairy

Grassward Dairy provides delicious, high-quality farmstead milk, cream and yogurt, produced with the highest standards for the animals, land and craft.

We work with Old World breed cows raised in a management intensive grazing system on 80 acres in Lebanon. We operate without reliance on hormones, antibiotics, confinement, or excessive grain, all of which are standard in modern dairies.

Our farm prioritizes:

  • Cows on pasture at Grassward Dairy

    Regenerative agriculture

Our dairy focuses on the principles of regenerative agriculture: improving soils, protecting and improving land resources, diversifying agricultural ecosystems, and sequestering carbon.

We’ve developed robust pastures, silvopastures, and grazing systems to match the number and breed of bovines to the production capacity of the land.

We are continually conducting science-based research and consultation on best practices.

    Environmental conservation

Our commitment to farming is continual improvement of the land, animals, natural resources, and community.

Riparian zone and stream protection, tree planting, and water conservation are a few of the many projects we have committed to.

    Nutrient-dense, organic feeding guidelines

We have several dairy mentors and do continual science-based research on best practices. We want our animals to consume high-quality feed grown in our bioregion with the minimal use of resources, including transport.

Part of our commitment to farming is land regeneration and pasture improvement, so the longer we're on this land, the more our animals can gain sustenance directly from it.

Starting in 2017, we leased land in the Coast Range for five years and observed pasture improvements from our management decisions. Since moving the dairy to Lebanon/Griggs in 2022, we’ve been using what we learned from our leased land and investing in long-term pasture improvements.

The milk cows, dry cows, heifers, steers, and calves are on a rotational grazing program, moving to new pasture every day in spring and early summer, as well as during the autumn grass flush. In winter, when the ground is saturated, the animals have cover and deep bedding back with adjacent “sacrifice pastures”, giving them access to stored feed, cozy spaces, and fresh air while protecting the land.

About our herd share

We offer access to raw milk and other dairy products through a community-supported model to folks who are interested in:

  • Directly supporting local, small dairy farmers

  • Knowing where and how the farming happens

  • Consuming fresh, delicious, high-quality, artisanal dairy products

  • Herdshare is a contractual agreement between a raw milk consumer and a dairy herd manager that allows for direct farm sales of raw milk and/or processed milk.

Each week, you’ll choose two items from the following:

    • 1⁄2 gallon milk

    • 1 pint cream

    • 1 quart yogurt

    • 1⁄2 gallon skimmed milk

We trust you to educate yourself about the care of and consumption of raw milk; you trust us to board and care for the animals using ethical and regenerative farming practices.

Realmilk.com is the website for the national raw milk advocacy nonprofit. We are dues-paying members of the associated Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund.

We’re currently seeking members and pick-up sites!

Neighbors are welcome to pick up from the farm.

If those times don’t fit your schedule, please contact us!

  • Raw milk
If kept consistently below 40°F it will last 7 to 10 days. Skimmed milk is available.

    Cream
We bottle one half gallon, let the cream rise for 24 hours, then hand skim one pint. This is not heavy whipping cream, and a small amount of skim may be present.

    Yogurt
Our yogurt is made with whole milk and cultures only and has a creamtop. It is not raw to allow us to isolate the particular yogurt cultures and to achieve a thick consistency. It has a 3 week shelf life.

All products are made with A2/A2 milk
Our entire herd is A2/A2, confirmed and tested by a laboratory!

*A1 and A2 are variants of beta-casein, part of the protein in milk. Better health effects, particularly with digestion, are reported in the consumption of A2/A2 dairy.
